Young green celebrity actress teen and ‘tween fave Ellen Page has accomplished quite a bit already during her stint in Hollywood and on feature films. At the ripe old age of 23, she has already garnered an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. However, for many of her fans in her native Canada, celebrity actress Page’s role in Whip It has spurred a renewed popularity in the sport of roller derby for health and fitness.

On Saturday Nov. 13, the Toronto Roller Derby League (ToRD) will be holding their house league championship tournament, at the Hanger in Downview Park in Toronto.

The tournament sold out in minutes; however disappointed fans will be able to view the event on Rogers Cable on December 4. It may be the first time roller derby has ever been broadcast nationally in Canada, and the sport’s fans credit the movie Whip It, and celebrity actress Ellen Page’s role in the movie, for sparking the regeneration of interest in roller derby in Canada — which, as an indoor sport allows Canadians to enjoy participating in year ’round health and fitness.
