Dancing With The Stars Review!

Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane magical Harry Potter Waltz enchanted the crowd?

[Apr. 12]

To heck with the judges scores, thought professional dancer and choreographer Mark Ballas when he created an enchanted waltz theme for celebrity contestant Chelsea Kane. Gorgeous. Beautiful. What more can a person say about this perfect Waltz, featured on Dancing With The Stars and later as a video review by PopCrunch, with a twist of modernity lent by the theme from Harry Potter? Len can say whatever he wants about the routine wrecking 300 years of traditional waltz interpretation, but Bruno and Carrie Ann carried the sentiment with the night, agreeing that Team Kanenball’s routine was “magical”.

In spite of the date Mark Ballas had with American Idol finalist Pia Toscano last Friday, it seemed Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane stole the night Monday with their ineffable charm and chemistry. Ballas and Kane just look natural together, and it will be a big surprise if the two fail to win the show.

With a rocky start, though clearly among the leaders, Team Kanenball was criticized for their jive, though Mark Ballas disagreed on the techniques, saying he had included a number of traditional jive steps, though in quite a fantastic manner. The judges really couldn’t contest much except to say that they felt it was technically off.

But Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane nailed it on Monday, leaving the judges little to complain about. With a score of 26 out of 30, Team Kanenball easily stole the show, and it is hard to think Chelsea Kane, whom the judges already have acknowledged as a fantastic dancer, can’t manage to wind up being the brightest shining star of this season of Dancing with the Stars.

Maybe Mark Ballas has a lighter foot after his date with American Idol Pia Toscano, who recently was voted off the show, much to the chagrin of her judges. Maybe Chelsea Kane has taken it up a notch after the jive criticism while still being complemented as a remarkable dancer with perhaps unearthed talent.

Whatever the case, Team Kanenball made what is sure to be known from now on as THE Harry Potter Waltz a hit. And more than one person would like to see this feisty dance couple do more than just dance together. Kudos to them both. The once relatively unknown Disney Princess, Chelsea Kane, is well on her way to being a dancing star.

And it is a good thing, too, that Mark Ballas seems to have learned from his experience dancing last season with lame Bristol Palin — that the Dancing With The Stars competion has voting flaws. Why? Because at any other pro dance competition, the judges scores outweigh any crowd approval. On DWTS, a celebrity couple can truly suck — like Bristol Palin or Kate Gosselin — and continue to remain on week after week, getting other more naturally graceful dancers booted off.

DWTS is, then, not as much of a show that focuses on any one professional set of dance skills communicated by dancers as perfromance pieces as it is a popularity contest.

Once Mark Ballas had that light bulb go on, his choreography became suddenly aggressive, posturing his new star Chelsea Kane — a relative unknown as a big name celeb but a well liked celebrity teen from the Disney Channel — to win.
