Light sensitive computer screen dimmer programGreen Tech!

Of all the eco-friendly gadgets for programs like Window 7, Flux might fight the most heroic battle… to save the humans.

How can people who live in the modern computer age keep surfing the internet to fight for causes like Save the Whales and Save the Seals if we can’t see out computer screens to read or write about it? On an eternal quest to find ways to do more work online and save trees, our GCN staff has nearly gone blind from eye strain and eye fatigue. We’re connected to our laptops now almost 24/7 very much like the Borg — and some say our editor Kae Davis is beginning to resemble the Star Trek Voyager character Seven. Hardwired to hit CTRL ++ or CTRL — to either make our computer screens brighter by day or dimmer by night simply was leaving us with a nasty case of Windows 7 overexposure to white screens at night.

For that reason, we struck out on a quest to find some sort of a filter attachment or cling screen film that could be added to our laptops to let us keep surfing the web by the equivalent of electronic candlelight. Finding no such items on eBay or the web to buy, and knowing our settings we all adjusted right for contrast and hue on our monitors, we began searching for a free download of a program that would make our computer screens a darker color white by night, while letting us still work out in the sun poolside or at the beach when the sunshine levels were high.

That’s when we found a nifty little green tech program that is on a quest to SAVE THE EYES. The noble designers of the software tool called FLUX should have some good karma coming their way for creating a program that dims or darkens your laptop computer screen or monitor based on the cycle of daily natural sunlight.

That’s right. Flux program was designed to save the humans.

You simply plug-in your zip code and the program will determine your latitude and longitude co-ordinates. Then, VOILA! It lets you select the screen settings for brightness or darkness. The program itself will follow the sun’s pattern each day for sunset and sunrise time — and will automatically adjust your screen settings white light.

When actor Robin Williams cried out, “Get ready to show ’em the white light we’re made of, boys…” in the classic family movie HOOK, he must have been talking to the Flux guys. Either that or they got inspired by the Flux capacitor in Back To The Future with actor Michael J. Fox. Either way, for the sake of our weary and tired eyes, we found this cool software gadget right on time.

Their program is the stuff that green night owls day dreams are made of…now — back to saving the whales and saving the seals instead of the humans.
