Was divorce the New Years Resolution for Katy Perry and Russell Brand? New Years Eve 2011 rumor mills reports are sharing the gossip that pop the darling pop music diva actually was the one who asked Russell Brand to file the divorce papers if he wanted out so her Christian parents would not be upset with her for not taking her marriage vows seriously. Was the celebrity couple’s joint decision to divorce quietly during a time when many media moguls would be away vacationing for the holidays their resolution — or was it to go through with their high-profile celebrity divorce while remaining civil?

Katy Perry and Russell Brand Just when we were all hoping that humanitarian actor Russell Brand and green celebrity songstress Katy Perry could reconcile some difficulties in their spicy marriage, and maybe even found the charity that the couple had hoped to establish together, word comes from TMZ that the couple has formally split. And it wasn’t Katy Perry who filed, the site says. Russell Brand filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. But why did he dump her (rather than she ditch him) after their big fight over religion before Christmas?

Previous reports had previously hinted that the couple may have been squabbling over Katy’s Christian upbringing. It had been said that Brand’s non-secular family didn’t quite jive with Katy Perry and her beliefs. So, in spite of plans for the couple to spend Christmas together in Brand’s hometown in England, Katy ditched and told her estranged husband that she was going to do her own thing … in Hawaii.

Today (New Years Eve 2011) rumor mills are reporting that Katy Perry actually was the one who asked Russell Brand to file the divorce papers if he wanted out so her Christian parents would not be upset with her for not taking her marriage vows seriously.

At first, fans of both the actor and the rocker were hoping it was just some holiday stress relief, and that celebrity charity wouldn’t suffer in the process [we’re sure Katy Perry still wants to start her own charity, but without a partner to share it with, she may balk — let’s hope not, her support of the Red Cross notwithstanding], but sources spotted Katy splashing in the Pacific Ocean without her wedding ring. A few people had hoped the missing ring was just a matter of Katy taking precautions in the surf. But apparently not.

TMZ says there is no word on the official date of separation, and Hollywood Life has been unable to get in touch with reps for either Perry or Brand to find out when exactly it was their decided not to be a celebrity couple in 2012 once New Years hit, but it seems to most fans that the separation had been in the works for some time. Back in November, the couple was laughing off rumors that they were splitting, and they continued to express solidarity into this month.

TMZ reports:

Russell appeared on “Ellen” just this month, slamming divorce rumors — claiming, “I’m really happily married … I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive.”

Apparently it wasn’t as happy as either star celeb wanted fans to believe. Was Free Tibet Movement celebrity supporter Russell Brand just unchanged in his bad boy ways, despite Katy’s optimism? Or was Katy’s religious upbringing too much for Brand and his family? He said he’ll always love her and that they remain friends. But he also seemed to be confident about sticking to his marriage vows. Tell us what you think.

It’s a sad day for celebrity charity work and green celebrity romance, but hopefully all will work out for the best for these famous humanitarian star celebs in the end.
