RIP Geraldine Ferraro!
Green celebrity the first lady Vice President nominee in American history–
[Mar. 26]
Geraldine Ferraro, a Democrat and the first female to run for Vice President of the United States on a major party ticket, has died at age 75. She was battling blood cancer. Ferraro ran with Walter Mondale in a landslide loss to incumbents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush in 1984. Ferraro was formerly an attorney and served on the United States House of Representatives.
A family spokeswoman says Ferraro died at Massachusetts General Hospital, reports NECN.com. She had been battling battled blood cancer for 12 years. Ferraro’s family was at her side when she passed away. In a statement, they called her a leader, an advocate and a fighter for justice.
A politician who became a green celebrity in her own right, Ferraro was well known as an advocate for women’s rights, cancer research, and treatment options for cancers. The Dallas Morning News reports from Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a Republican:
“Geraldine Ferraro was one of the great female role models of her generation,” Hutchison said in a statement. “In politics, she was a trailblazer who helped make new heights of leadership possible for women. In her personal life, she courageously battled cancer with tenacity and grace. She reached out to others who were waging their own fights against cancer and helped educate them on treatment options and always offered encouragement.”
According to IMDb, Geraldine Ferraro was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame twice, in both 1991 and 1994. Although she was taking medication to treat her blood cancer, and it had gone into remission a decade ago, the blood cancer (malignant multiple myelomia) kills about half of all patients who suffer with it.
Multiple myeloma is a disease in which malignant plasma cells spread through the bone marrow and hard outer portions of the large bones of the body. These myeloma cells may from tumors called plasmacytomas. Eventually, multiple soft spots or holes, called osteolytic lesions, from in the bones, according to Healthline. Unfortunately, the Thalidomide which the green celebrity politician Geraldine Ferraro was taking was unable to save her life.
A green celebrity among women in politics, Geraldine Ferraro will be missed by family, friends, and all the women she emboldened to rise to the top ranks in politics, business, arts, and green celebrity culture worldwide.
