The youngest of four children, Depp has one brother and two sisters. His family moved frequently during Depp’s childhood, and he and his siblings lived in more than 20 different locations, settling in Miramar, Florida in 1970. With the gift of a $25 guitar from his mother when he was 12, Depp began teaching himself to play by listening to records while locked away in his room. He eventually started up a few garage bands. In 1978 his parents divorced and a year later, Depp dropped out of high school to become a rock musician and though he attempted to go back to school two weeks later, the principal told him to follow his dream of being a musician.

He divorced Lori Anne Allison in 1985 and is currently living with his long-time girlfriend French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children: Lily-Rose Melody, born in 1999 and Jack, born in 2002.
