Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Hawaii over the weekend for the annual Asian-Pacific Economic Summit, but the economy wasn’t the only hot topic. As the former first lady and green celebrity posed with the chief executive of Hong Kong for a photo-op, a traditional Hawaiian fire thrower, dressed in just a small loincloth, streaked behind the pair. Clinton spun in shock and turned back to the camera with a big grin and a laugh, clapping her seeming approval, as seen in this video from ABC. And quite frankly, it was the first time many have seen the real Hil personality come out!
Hopefully the politician’s delightful giggle won’t be seen by her opposition as somehow crass, though it’s hard to tell what’s going to offend whom these days. Besides, it’s in the hot state of Hawaii, the state that President Barack Obama may or may not have been born in, according to skeptics. Hillary Clinton already got in trouble for laughing as she quipped the circumstances surrounding Gaddafi’s death last month. But Clinton seems at ease next to her companion, a somber Donald Tsang, as the fire thrower jogs past without any further apparent disruption. Maybe Hillary Clinton is feeling relaxed since learning that daughter Chelsea Clinton will be working for NBC as a special correspondent.
According to the New York Times, NBC announced Monday that Chelsea Clinton had signed on as a full-time special correspondent, to begin immediately. She is to work on stories for an upcoming series, “Making a Difference”. By some measure at her parents’ request and by some measure of her own will, Chelsea Clinton largely has remained out of the public eye, in spite of her considerable work for humanitarian causes. But she slowly has been raising her public profile. She has said she has been touched by stories of the personal contributions of others and wants to highlight similar stories.
Ms. Clinton said she plans to donate most of what she earns from the position. Among the causes she will be supporting are those represented by her family’s Clinton Foundation, and she wants to donate to George Washington University Hospital in the name of her grandmother.
Both Hillary Clinton, husband Bill Clinton, and vegan daughter Chelsea Clinton are green celebrities who support a wide range of causes through the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, addressing environmental concerns, health and education issues, poverty, economic and business solutions, and more. Hillary Clinton also has spoken out about human rights, global warming, and women’s rights. The celebrity mom turned politician also spoke at the Human Rights Campaign Gala in 2007 and at Vital Voices, empowering women, in 2009.
