Tom Cruise was a special guest presenter at the 2012 Oscars, but he and his wife Katie Holmes were both a no-show on the red carpet. Opting to skip the early awards show hoopla and festivities, the celebrity couple opted to make their appearance on the red carpet in a way that was more behind the scenes. The celebrity parents of darling daughter Suri Cruise must have gotten themselves a baby sitter — because after the show they both hit up the posh and glamorous Vanity Fair Oscars Party. The magazine hosts a luxury event that would make most party planners jaws drop open with amazement. Apparently Tom-Kat (as A-Listers) felt that showing up for the fans outside the venue formerly known as the Kodak Theater was not as important as rubbing elbows with the who’s who list of Hollywood’s most rich and famous.
Has actor Tom Cruise become an idle idol? The Tom-Kat publicity machine cruised the celebrity couple straight through the Academy Awards 2012 festivities and rituals, barely on idle. Pop Sugar shared, “Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes stopped for photos on their way inside Vanity Fair‘s Oscars bash in LA tonight. Tom stuck with his suit while Katie chose a strapless embellished number and sported bangs. Tom skipped the red carpet at tonight’s show, where he presented best picture to The Artist. He attended solo, though it looks like Katie decided to join him in celebrating Hollywood’s biggest evening.”
His wife Katie Holmes has been a devoted mother to the celeb’s daughter Suri Cruise since the love birds got married. She’s been such a dutiful wife to tom and mom to Suri that people have even wondered if Tom and the Church of Scientology have brainwashed the formerly animated actress into having that blank stare she so regularly wears. But her husband never seems to look unhappy. On the contrary, since he’s become a dad to Suri and hubs to Katie, he seems to look sexier and (for whatever reason) has been getting funnier.
And speaking of funny, the actor helped out Billy Crystal a bit by participating in one of the video clip segments that aired while the Oscars crew was busy doing set shifts.
“Billy Crystal started his ninth stint as the host of the Oscars with a montage of some of the year’s best movies, which included cameos from Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, and more. He kicked things off with a well-timed joke about the Oscars during what is a tough time for some. Billy said, “Nothing can take the sting out of the world’s economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues…” said the celebrity gossip website, noting that while the audience laughed proudly, the truth of the irony implied by the remark may have even made more than one family watching from their television set at home turn the entire program off.
But economic crisis surely was not slowing any of these celebs party lifestyles or hosting budget down. The Vanity Fair bash was said to be as glamorous as always — a mix of Hollywood insiders, rich and famous people, and a mix of star celebs who love to meet up and chat with their celebrity friends.
According to Vanity Fair magazine, “It’s the star-soaked party whose glitter is a year in the making: Graydon Carter’s annual Vanity Fair Oscar party at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. During the telecast of the 84th annual Academy Awards, A-listers from all different industries gather for an elegant dinner to watch the ceremony. Then, after all the statuettes have been handed out, the winners make their way from the Kodak Theatre to join the celebration.”
According to the socialites who attended, while the Academy Awards might have all gone to The Artist and it’s stars, the Oscars night really belonged to actress Meryl Streep (who won Best Actress for her work in The Iron Lady). Knowing that Hollywood social circles can be fickle, trendy, and clique-ish their comments were not surprising. The fact that the veteran actress was honored more in private for yet another solid theatrical performance more than a group of incredibly talented relative newcomers only makes sense. After all, when playing party favorites, why not give bigger kudos to the people in Hollywood who already have amassed enormous star power?
Mega congrats to Jean Dujardin for letting Hollywood celebs know that sometimes silence is golden.
On a happier note, movie stars Tom and Katie are still doing lots of charity work (even if they did act a bit snobby and distracted at the 2012 Academy Awards, electing to keep to themselves or only chatting with friends — not entertaining their fan base looking to snap camera photos of the street-side glam).
Tom Cruise has done charity benefit work for the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation (started by the famous Asian action movie actor), Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and Mentor LA.
Katie Holmes has helped out friend Madonna with her foundation called Raising Malawi, a school project in Africa. She’s also done work for Love Our Children USA and Stockings With Care (both children’s charities).
