Green Celebrity Death: Who was Tim Hetherington, the dead Oscar nominee?

Green Celebrity Death!

Who was Tim Hetherington, the Oscar nominee killed in Lybia in 2011?

[Apr. 24]

Tim Hetherington was born in Liverpool, UK, on December 5, 1970. He originally studied literature at Oxford University, but he went back to school to get a degree in photojournalism. He had been living in New York, and had been sharing his time there with time in London. He maintained dual citizenship. He contributed regularly to Vanity Fair magazine, for which much of his photojournalism work in Afghanistan was done.

Over the course of his career, Tim Hetherington, a green celebrity player behind the camera, became active in humanitarian circles, using his skills with still frame photography and video camera equipment to capture the social and political impact that war had on regions abroad, including Afghanistan, Liberia, and most recently in Libya, where he was killed by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade, fired by Qaddafi forces.

Tim Hetherington was best known for his work on Restrepo (2010), a documentary film covering a year with a platoon in one of the most dangerous areas in Afghanistan. Hetherington was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary this past January, but lost to Exit Through the Gift Shop with the notoriously world-renowned street artist, Banksy.

However, Tim Hetherington was the recipient of many awards, according to his website, prior to the hit Restrepo. He was a cameraman for Liberia: An Uncivil War (2004) and for The Devil Came on Horseback (2007). He also wrote two books — Long Story Bit by Bit: Liberia Retold, capturing the history of present-day Liberia, and Infidel (2010) about the soldiers in Aghanistan, studying the effects on conflict on the young men at the front. His most recent project, a short film called Diary he called highly experimental and it currently is being shown at multiple film festivals.

While this green celebrity author, photojournalist, and filmmaker was not beholden to one side or the other, he did work hard as a humanitarian to expose the effects of war and conflict on societies and individuals alike, and he has received numerous awards for his efforts. He had a Fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts from 2000 to 2004. He received a grant from the Hasselblad Foundation for photography in 2002. He received four awards from World Press Photo, which aims to promote excellence in photojournalism. Ultimately he won Photo of the Year from World Press Photo in 2007. From the Rory Peck Trust, named after an Irish freelance cameraman killed in Russia while covering the constitutional crisis there, Tim Hetherington won the Rory Peck Features (rather than shorts) award in 2008. And he won an Alfred I. Dupont award, recognizing excellence in broadcast journalism, in 2009.

Lady Gaga apologizes to fans for retarded comment via Perez Hilton blog?

Celebrity OOPS!

Lady Gaga apologizes to fans for retarded comment via Perez Hilton blog?

[Apr. 22]

Lady Gaga told British music magazine NME that accusations of plagiarism are “retarded.” But almost immediately realizing her celebrity OOPS moment, she apologized for the use of that particular word. Saying the use of the comment goes against what she does to support causes that she associates with, including her outspoken support for the LGBT community, Lady Gaga ate crow with a seriously apologetic game face on. “I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance,” said Gaga in a statement released through celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. Yes, that is right. She used Perez Hilton to help her get the word out to Little Monsters and Critics everywhere that Lady Gaga did not mean to make a slur against the special needs community or to demean them. She readily admitted her words were chosen poorly.

The press release statement Lady Gaga issued about having used the word retarded inappropriately was written in such a way that is was very politically correct. She writes:

“To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional.

Whether life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.”

TheSocialChallenge.org has demonstrated that when engaged, like Lady Gaga, users of the word “retard” are likely to apologize.

You can visit the site to see live streams of tweets using the word. Consider telling those who are using it to take it back and find a better word to discuss the situation. The way Lady Gaga used it demonstrates just how casual it can be, and how unfair it really is.

Says Holly Roos:

“It’s really unfortunate when someone with as much influence as Lady Gaga uses that word,” said Holly Roos, an advocate for TheSocialChallenge.org, and a mother of two children with Fragile-X syndrome.

“But through The Social Challenge, in just over a month, we’ve actually had hundreds of people tweet back with apologies, pledging not to use the word in the future. It’s a great opportunity to make a difference, and I’m really glad to see that Lady Gaga thought better of her words, too.”

Glenn Beck leaving FOX News to compete with Jon Stewart and Comedy Central?

Now THAT is funny!

Glenn Beck leaving FOX News to compete with Comedy Central?

[Apr. 21]

Glenn Beck says he’s not going to hold back against Jon Stewart of The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report, both comedians and commentators for the Comedy Central cable television network, once The Glenn Beck Show is discontinued by FOX later this year. Both Stewart and Colbert have repeatedly lampooned Glenn Beck for some of his outrageous commentary, including impersonating Beck’s end-of-the-world fatalism.

“I am going to make sure that Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart do not occupy the space of comedy alone,” Glenn Beck said, according to Death and Taxes magazine.

News commentator Glenn Beck has said he’ll be leaving his show later this year, but that he has no animosity toward FOX News. He has said he’s looking for opportunities to change media and says he will not be doing it in New York, even though his media company, Mercury Radio Arts, is set up in New York with no plans to move, according to Business Insider.

But can Glenn Beck even begin to make it in comedy? Some say maybe. A report from Time magazine says writer Joel Stein was tapped to help write material for Beck for a Common Sense Comedy Tour in 2009. Stein wasn’t exactly favorable to the FOX News personality, but he wasn’t completely terrible about it either. He noted Beck had a couple of cute jokes of his own, but said, “It turns out that coming up with jokes for members of a reactionary, religious, libertarian audience is not easy.”

Around the world yacht racing enthusiasts just say no to fossil fuels?

[Apr. 21]

You don’t have to be a full time green celebrity to realize that going green makes perfect sense. Called “the world’s ultimate solo challenge,” wind power fuels an eight month solo yacht race around the world that has been held every four years since 1982. The race began in La Rochelle, France in October, and is expected to conclude after the fifth and final leg of the race from Charleston, SC, back to La Rochelle.

“I’m not an environmentalist, or I don’t thump it too hard, but I am there,” said Derek Hatfield of Nova Scotia, who has placed second in the latest leg of the race, according to Reuters. “Things have changed a lot more than we think. I hope it’s not too late. I hope that we can make a difference.”

And that’s the perfect attitude to take. We may not all be green celebrities able to afford green technologies to help us get away from fossil fuels completely, but demonstrating that it can be done, over the long haul, especially for such a grueling race, is promising.

These green skippers are sailing what are called “Eco 60s”, which are old Open 60 yachts outfitted with solar panels, wind generators, and hydrogenerators that power the autopilots, GPS, satellite phones, and laptops that the skippers use while on the seas.

“The goal, of course, is not to use any fossil fuel at all,” said Derek.

Going Green: Chevrolet Volt named 2011 World Green Car at NY Auto Show

Going Green!

Star celebs fav green car Chevrolet Volt named 2011 World Green Car at NY Auto Show —

[Apr. 21]

Late night talk show hosts Jay Leno and David Letterman ought to be happy. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt was named 2011 World Green Car of the Year at the New York Auto International Auto Show this week, and both star celebs have been endorsing going green automobiles. The celebrities have actually come forward to give their celebrity endorsement to green transportation on both of their respective television shows, helping promote the idea that clean and green transportation is the way to go.

Further, both star celebs have shown support for American auto products including the Ford Fusion and the new Chevy Volt. While Ford has remained financially independent, Chevy took bail out money from the U.S. government. There has been some private sector criticism that any awards given to the Chevy Volt are at the behest of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and House Democrats. However, the people at Chevy who participated in the design, production implementation, and marketing of the new green car say that playing politics to win favors in the United States just ain’t so.

“The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel-efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe.”

The Chevrolet Volt was chosen from an initial entry list of 12 new vehicles from around the world, then a shorter list of 10, then three finalists: the Chevrolet Volt, the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition and the Nissan Leaf. The award is decided by a panel of global automotive journalists.
