American built Ford GT perfect exotic car for museum quality auto investment?
Looking to buy an investment grade automobile that is made in America this Memorial Day Weekend? One that is more sustainable because you keep it for well beyond the normal life of a car that is a daily driver you would be tempted to trade in after only a few short years? If you have the cash on hand and know the right auto broker who can find you one, consider buying and keeping an exotic car called the Ford GT. Any production year you can get your hands on is likely to be good, but a newer model as an investment to become a museum quality auto is actually preferred [because the company was able to work many of the kinks out of the more recent designs]. The fact that it is a Ford product makes gremlins in the motor easy to predict, diagnose, and repair, but the more recent the model year, the less trouble you will have with the exotic car or have a need to cough up cash to repair. Heck, even singer John Mayer owns one (so surely you can impress all the hipster guys and groovy girls)…
The more modern production of the Ford GT is based on the design of a famous historic automobile. The exotic car was truly a reproduction of the Ford GT that competed in 24 hour Le Mans in the 1960s — but it was not like the failed Thunderbird remake (which was a retro cool-car inspired flop). The new Ford GT is all kinds of hot in part because the old Ford GT 40 (its predecessor) was a future car design; the Ford Thunderbird was a classic hot rod. When they remade the new Thunderbird with a future car look, they lost the interest of the classic car collectors who would have otherwise bought it. The Ford GT does not have the stigma of being “too future car looking” — as the original GT 40 exotic car design was timeless.
Cost is roughly (at the time of this publication) going to run somewhere in the $120s up to $180 for a 2005 model version depending on appointments and edition.
The 550 horse power engine will take you every bit of 200 miles per hour for a day at the track, but the wide body will make you less likely to drive it though town on any daily ride as it will be difficult to park street side.
For a sports car, the Ford GT offers a comfortable ride with predictable handling at high speeds (a real plus for many drivers).
If you are looking for and investment grade automobile to buy to turn into a museum quality heirloom piece to keep in your family for the long run, it looks hot, everybody oohs and ahs over it when you do bring it out to display for a worthy cause like at a charity benefit fund-raiser, and limited production numbers make it highly collectible over time.
Treating the car with that level of respect and keeping mileage under 2k total per year makes the high gas prices bill [12 MPG city, 14 MPH highway] helps to make this exotic car more eco friendly. It will never be a green exotic car, that is for sure — but once automobile manufacturers make the turn in the next 10 – 25 years to only producing green cars, owning a gas-powered exotic car will surely make you a local neighborhood oddity… and if you keep it nice, more wealthy by the time your car turns 50.
THE ONLY DOWN SIDE OF BUYING A FORD GT — the American craftsmanship made it typical to have body parts that were ill-fitting direct from the factory — so if you are a perfectionist and can’t overlook aesthetics for the muscle, this won’t be the right ride for you to keep in your garage and admire without buying the car and adjusting all the body panels to where the car is aesthetically perfect. It is highly unlikely the exotic car will ever come to you looking millimeter measurement perfect from the factory. The engines are built at Ford’s Romeo, Michigan plant and the body is assembled at the auto manufacturing giant’s plant known as the Ford Renewable Energy Park in Wixom, Michigan. The plant was where Ford assembled their highest quality automobiles historically like the Lincoln and Ford Thunderbird.
